The Package Allocation setting controls how products in a checkout are grouped into packages for pricing and rate calculation. This helps ensure shipping costs are accurate based on package, quantity, size, and weight constraints.
Please note that all carriers have different size and weight limits. Please check these limits accordingly before setting limits, for example, Post Haste cannot take a 40kg package.
Available Options
1. All Products Combined into a Single Package (No Limits)
All products in the checkout are treated as one package, regardless of quantity, size, or weight.
- No size or weight limits are applied
- The total weight and cubic volume of the order will be calculated as a single package
- Useful for Bulk Shipments
2. All Products Combined into a Single or Multiple Packages (With Limits)
All products attempt to ship as one package, up to the defined size and weight limits.
When this option is selected, two additional fields will appear:
- Max Weight Per Package
- Max Cubic Per Package
The system will:
- Add all product weights and/or sizes together and then attempt to allocate these to a single package unless the max limit is reached, in which case multiple packages are used.
3. Each Product Allocated A New Package (No Limits)
Products are automatically split into multiple packages (i.e., every product will be assigned a new package).
- No size or weight limits are applied per product
- Useful for businesses that have a set size box or a new package for each product sent.
4. Summary Table
Selected Option | Example Order | Limits | Logic Applied (assuming both volume and weight are used) | Expected Result |
| All Products Combined into a Single Package (No Limits) | 1 x Product A (10kg, 0.015m3) | n/a | Add all product weights and volumes together | 1 x Package: 48kg, 0.06m3 |
| All Products Combined into a Single Package (No Limits) | 1 x Product A (10kg, 0.015m3) | n/a | Add all product weights and volumes together: | 1 x Package: 10kg, 0.015m3 |
| All Products Combined into a Single or Multiple Packages (With Limits) | 1 x Product A (10kg, 0.015m3) | Max Cubic Volume = 0.125m3 Max Weight = 25kg | Add all product weights and volumes together. Divide by limits. | 2 x Packages: |
| All Products Combined into a Single or Multiple Packages (With Limits) | 1 x Product A (30kg, 0.015m3) | Max Cubic Volume = 0.125m3 Max Weight = 25kg | Add all product weights and volumes together. Divide by limits. | 2 x Packages: |
| Each Product Allocated A New Package (No Limits) | 1 x Product A (10kg, 0.015m3) | n/a | Allocate a package per product. Validate each product size/weight against limits and allocate a new package if limits are exceeded | 4 x Packages |
| Each Product Allocated A New Package (No Limits) | 1 x Product A (30kg, 0.015m3) | n/a | Allocate a package per product. Validate each product size/weight against limits and allocate a new package if limits are exceeded | 1 x Package |
